What Are Tape Backup Systems

These days when someone talks about a tape backup do you wonder why would someone still use such old technology? Well there's a very strong possibility that they are not referring to the VCR tape backup but in fact the tape backup systems for computers. If you don't know what's a tape backup system, it is basically the holy Grail of computer backups because of its size and performance. If you own a PC then you understand the importance of having a computer backup. The same principle applies for companies but instead of having individual backups they have what we call tape libraries.

Mostly used by companies, tape backup systems are also known as tape libraries simply because a tape library is a huge case containing usually over hundreds of drives. Specifically designed for backup these drives will allow transfer rate that is much more faster than any personal use or peripherals.

Depending on the company's needs though you may not need so many drives which is why most companies offer tape libraries in various formats that can vary between one or two drives to over 300 drives. In most cases these drives will contain at least a few hundred gigabytes and can go beyond hundreds of terabytes.

The great thing about tape backup systems for companies is they can store all the data from every single computer into one room which makes it a lot easier to access when they need to. Of course this solution is very expensive because the products are not cheap and you will need to save some office space for these tape systems.

For companies working in the technology industry backups are very crucial and they cannot afford to neglect this expense so they will be willing to pay thousands of dollars for a great backup system. Of course we do need to make sure that they can cover the investment or else some of them usually share their backup system with a neighbor company.

As far as the individual user is concerned tape backup systems will never be better than a simple DVD backup system. Even small companies do not need to resort to such methods and if you are one of those small companies using a more simple form of backup solutions would probably be better than going and buy a huge tape library for a few thousand dollars.
